Most Startup Sales Leaders Aren't Bad at Ops. They Just Never Get to It.

Sales LeadershipRevOpsAI in Sales

Most startup sales leaders aren't bad at ops. They just never get to it.

Brian Wagner ran sales at CloudCraze for a year before Salesforce bought it. When I asked what he'd do differently, he said he'd have put more into operations. They were running so fast that every week was about one thing... more deals. The forecast, the pipeline discipline and the operating rhythm all waited.

Every early-stage sales leader knows that trade. You can't hire RevOps at 20 people, so you either sell or you run the machine.

That trade is gone. Here's what replaced it for me:

A live GTM tracker, built in an afternoon. Board updates stopped being a slide and became a link. I stopped getting surprised in Week 11.

A coach for each sales motion, trained on our own wins and losses. I don't carry 30 deals in my head anymore. The coach does.

A business case that flows straight into the deal desk. Pricing gets enforced instead of discounted away.

None of it took a RevOps team. It took Claude (Anthropic), our CRM data and a few afternoons.

Brian's best work at CloudCraze was the work nobody else could do: the strategy, the positioning, building the team and closing new logos. Now picture him spending all his time there, with Claude running the rest. He'd never miss a forecast. He'd catch top-of-funnel problems early. He'd adjust the GTM plan on real-time data, not January's assumptions. And his reps would get coached after every call, whether he was in the room or not.

He wouldn't have had to choose.

My full conversation with Brian is on The Winding Road Show.
